Welcome to 2018!

A shout-out all of you that participated in last week’s challenge:

And now, for the first Haikai challenge of the year:

This week, the east coast of the United States endured Winter Storm Grayson. Iguanas dropped from their perches in Florida. Long Island, NY, recorded over 12 inches of snow. New York City Schools closed (wo-hoo!). And New England may still be experiencing an Ice Age!

No sooner had Grayson cleared out then a blast of artic cold settled into the New York Metropolitan area!

Winter has thrown down the gauntlet. So this week, your choice of unconventional kigo includes either Winter Storm or Artic Cold. Any haiku, senryu, haibun, tanka, renga, haiga or haikai poem of your choice is fair game!

As always:

Here’s how the challenge works:

1. write the haikai poem of your choice.
2. post the link of your post to Mister Linky.
3. pingback by posting the link to the challenge on your site.
4. read and comment on other contributors’ posts.

Stay warm, haijin!

I live on the southern tip of Africa. Such weather as you and Jules describe is beyond my ken. Not sure I’m up to this one! Keep warm!

Do you experience any kind of storm during winter? A rain storm, say? Then this challenge is for you! 😉

And yet, this is nothing new. Well, except for naming the winter storms like hurricanes. It makes for better press. A few decades ago, when Janesville, Wisconsin recorded a record -64, the general consensus across the nation was, “Boy! I’m sure glad I don’t live in Wisconsin!”

I already did my daily – which fits with ‘winter’ and ‘cold’.
For the first time in a few decades our creek has completely frozen over.
Our temp this morning was ‘darned cold’ 🙂

It sounds pathetic when our temperatures are around 60°F to be complaining, but it feels cold!

😆 When we went to Alaska two summers ago, we bundled in layers in the 50s. The anchorage natives walked around in T-shirts and shorts! 😆 The feeling of cold is subjective, no?
