“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that”

I never knew my about mother’s prejudice until I was almost thirteen. She deliberately chose to withold any comment, or display any attitude, that would influence me to adopt her biases.

Others’ parents did not make such enlightened decisions.

dark night

“better to light a candle

than curse the darkness”

the nature of a sunrise

inspires a lasting peace

“Hate cannot drive out hate: Only love can do that”

Desmond Tutu played an instrumental role in the Truth Commission after the fall of Aparthaid in South Africa. Truths were laid bare, so people could forgive, and a divided country could become whole.

Other nations have not made such enlightened choices.

breaking dawn

“I’ve seen love conquor

the great divide…”

astride the stage in these acts

pursuing a hunch of truth

America, we have come so far. America, we have so far to go.

midday sun

celebration of a life

filled with love and light

Hats off to your mother! We need to understand our own biases to be able to do that. It leaves me thinking – how did she build analytical capability in you, so that you build your own biases?

She kept hers to herself. She encouraged me to read to answer my own questions, and to form my own perspective on matters. Thanks for reading, Reena! 🙂

A peaceful haibun, Frank, with an interesting shape. I love autobiographical poetry of any shape of form – it teaches me about other human beings and the way this world works.Thank heaven for that candle of enlightenment.

Whatever happened to Desmond Tutu? They could do with a reminder from him in South Africa.

And how thoughtful of your mom to not want to pass along her own prejudices.

I love the theme of the sun resurfacing throughout the poem, how no matter where it is in the sky, we are asked to inspire peace and forgiveness. Fantastic, Frank.

Very good presentation of the quotes with your poetry. Hate thrives in the shadows of darkness .Light exposes it for what it is…love overwhelms and brings healing.

Frank, these poems, and your prose are so moving. I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s up to us as Americans to take a stand against hate, discrimination, and racism. It’s obvious our government has lost their way, motivated by hate and things that don’t even understand. Thanks for your insights. ❤

We have come far, and we have far to go… I do like the first part about your mother… to be aware of your own prejudices is the first step in not letting them fester in others.
