Onward! Winter continues in New York, but we enjoy the first day with temperatures above freezing in a week. I hear the cries of blue jays perched on the bare branches of Maple trees in my backyard. It brings to mind a traditional kigo for winter: hawk.

Graceful. Beautiful. Fierce. These mid-sized raptors plummet upon their prey from the heights. I once saw one snatch an injured squirrel right off of my lawn!

“Remember… hawks are God’s gunslingers.”
— Cort

This week, let’s get traditional! Write the haikai poem of your choice (haiku, senryu, tanka, haibun, renga/renku, haiga, etc.) using the kigo hawk

As always:

Here’s how the challenge works:

1. write the haikai poem of your choice.
2. post the link of your post to Mister Linky.
3. pingback by posting the link to the challenge on your site.
4. read and comment on other contributors’ posts.

While I appreciate pingbacks, please be sure to add your post to Mister Linky! Otherwise, I will miss your contribution when I post the weekly roundup, as I export from Mister Linky to do so.

Once more into the breach, haijin!

Again, good hunting!

Thank you for this kigo Frank. It is one of my favorites. We have several varieties of hawks in this area, not to mention ,osprey, owls, and eagle. I write one haiku a day at least about hawks. I love the haiku about hawks. yesterday one kept circling checking out my bird feeders. I moved them farther back into the hedge and the small birds were safe Poor hawk must have gotten hungry. It finally flew down and waited oh so patiently and alas, snatched one of the small birds. but…raptors have to eat too!

How marvelous! Just this morning, I had a visit from a sharp-shinned hawk. Today he left hungry, but there have been days when he feasted heartily on the poor unsuspecting birds. They love to frequent feeders.
