this Autumnal day

A thirst for more than water

beside a vessel more than full

Still, the weight. An unseen sorrow, an ennui. Too many days in this den? Too much stifling heat or suffocating humidity? Or is it the ambitious expectations too high to meet: a new journal barely scribbled in, a serial of travel posts undone?

Or the inevitable, seasonal turn toward Autumn?

Coolness prevailed yesterday and reigns today. The cricket choirs and Katydid accompanists fill the growing nights. Tinges of yellow appear on the crabapple leaves.

A deep sorrow, born of clinging to the transitory. How we desperately hold on to what passes away.

Instead of breathing, bowing, and letting go.

Great Tanka, Autumn approaching for you, for us in NZ its Spring, the magnolia tree is starting to bud, giving a peaceful feeling of a season of growth after a cold winter.

Indeed, Elsie! Enjoy your Spring! The irony for me as a teacher is that Autumn is still my favorite season! 😆 Thanks! 😀

Sorrow is indeed fed by the energy we put into holding on to what won’t stay put… Might as well say adios to the heat… and welcome knee-high boots, skirts, and cool hats… Winter though, I shall aim all kinds of finger-gestures to that frigid friend when he starts lurking into my bones. 😀

😆 I would LOVE to see your finger-gesture toward winter! Autumn is actually my favorite season—even though I teach! 😆 Thanks for reading! 😀

This is such a beautifully evocative write, Frank ❤ Autumn is my favorite season too which is why I resonate strongly with “A deep sorrow, born of clinging to the transitory. ” 😊

Frank, what a lovely Haibun weaving sorrow into the inevitable changing of the seasons. You captured these emotions so well. This is great prose and poetry that speaks to our soul! ❤

I like the heart in this piece, and how it brings to mind that holding on to anything impermanent is folly and keeps us from fully enjoying what is right at that moment.

Exactly, Rommy! We often inflict suffering on ourselves by clinging so fast to what’s already passing away. Thank you for reading. I’m happy you enjoyed it! 😀
