two shell casings

another Black man’s back

bullet-struck

bleeding wounds left untreated

a kick, then two planted feet

two minutes

blood blending

with the dark

Another name to the list

while protestors fill the streets

A chalk outline left behind

Your short, terse images are perfect for the staccato of gunshots and protest chants.

Hard-hitting and topical, Frank. Perfect illustration for your prompt.

Topical. I’m wishing (& working for) different images, though. Imagine.

Indeed. If only it weren’t topical.

Oh gosh – that took my breath away. The stark use of language somehow manages to convey the absolute depravity of this violent act far more effectively than a barrage of effusive words ever could.

That is the power of imagery—and imagism. Thanks, Suzanne.

Maybe some day people will read these words and say, “It is hard to believe this ever happened here in the US.”

Another name to add to the statistics but a wrong time to happen. The pandemic complicates matters
A sad episode, Frank but well taken.

Very vivid images of another sad loss of life! Casings, kicks and a chalk drawing left in the street… can’t get much more vivid!

Two shell casings two planted feet two minutes,,, too long this story gets repeated, too many have suffered and been killed.
    Well done this poem.

I love the monochrome tone your sequence evokes, Frank, the contrast between the short and long lines, and especially the powerful image of the ‘chalk outline left behind’.

Surprising take for an imagist poem but perfect for the time and a serious update. Such a canyon of historic wrong in those wounds, ruts we can’t get up out from. Can we read the news so closely? What did WC Williams say- “It is difficult / to get the news from poems/ yet men die miserably every day / for lack / of what is found there.” I didn’t post such to this challenge, but I am working on a Juneteenth poem.

Thank you, Brendan. While it may be difficult to get the news from poems, it’s unfortunately become too easy to get poems from the news.

I look forward to your Juneteenth poem!
