A Triple-Waterfall Experience: a #haiku sequence

Upper, Middle, Lower Portage Falls, Letchworth State Park, NY

12, 000 years

carving through limestone

Genesee river

low-pitched roar

a saturating mist

soft on our skin

stair upon stair

spreading from the bottom

a rainbow

a long hike

how mesmorizing, this

falling water

even in

this stifling heat

Portage Falls

I’m hosting dVerse Poets’ MTB, where we write haiku sequences. The pub is open! Come join us!

This one is for my own current #Haikai Challenge, too!

The river is beautiful and the way you describe it is heavenly, Frank. Such evocative and wonderful writing. I also thank you for creating this prompt, it’s a very innovative writing challenge. Haikus are personally one of my least favorite poetic forms to write in, but your prompt inspired me to jump in and give it a shot. I thank you for that. ❤

Anyway. Excellent piece here with intrinsically raw imagery. I love it.

The haiku give the sense of movement, of stairs, in their sequencing – works so well with the subject.

I agree with Xenia about the way your sequence cascades in rhythm with the falling water, Frank. I love the appeal to the senses in:
    ‘low-pitched roar
    a saturating mist
    soft on our skin’
    and the stunning image in:
    ‘stair upon stair
    spreading from the bottom
    a rainbow’.

Letchworth is a beautiful place, and you honor it well. I visited it many times before (and since) moving from Western New York. It’s one of my favorite places.
