An Inaugural Sail

Image courtesy of Boys’ Life Magazine

The wind fills the sails. The sleek, fiberglass hull slices through Levitt Bay water. A soft woosh of a wake, as I speed along in a sunfish. The tiller in one hand, the line to the sail in another, as I adjust course.

The utter joy of my first time sailing. A pleasure I haven’t reexperienced in so many years.

WOW, I felt like I was right there, Frank! Such a wonderful experience, especially for the first time to sail. It sounds tranquil and thrilling. Thank you for sailing me along today with your marvelous poem. It’s so picturesque and evocative.

Such simple little sail boats; so accessible and empowering! You capture that in your poem.

You don’t need to say much to convey the joy here. Your haiku is perfect. I felt it.

You took me there, Frank. The details are so intricate and tender! And the haiku is one of the most succinct I’ve ever read. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve sailed once, more than 40 years ago. I was visiting a friend in St. Pete, and he took me on his Sunfish. Even something that small can be exciting, and you captured it, here.

The haiku at the end is, I think, what a haiku should be. Admiration!

I have not sailed in years either… but the thrill I do remember (and also the cases where I was stuck without any wind at all)
