Missing the Moon
(reverse haibun with tanka)the twelfth night there was
a halo, the next was full
of misty moist fogthere’d be no re-gifting of
Friday’s harvest moon this yearUp north in rarefied air the weather played kill-joy. It wasn’t until the afternoon that I was able to find out just by looking out the window that the sun was to slubber in and out of the clouds. I was able to put on my walking shoes and traverse several times over 100 yards (not that I’m bragging, it’s just one way to spend an afternoon in a different town and see the sights). As a general rule I like to walk at least five miles a day. I chose not to go around the lake where it was sure I’d be slipping on the muddy trails. There were shops open but offered nothing that I needed or wanted to buy.
We made it home Friday evening. Traveling is always a gamble even on highways and state roads. We saw quite a few Coppers who came to the aid of several accidents or were protecting us from the monsters who might speed.
By Saturday the weather even a few hours south of north – remained iffy. that evening we chose to go out to a restaurant by our small local airport. The Amish field must have already been harvested. In the distance we could see the ground being prepared for next spring. Two huge horses pulled the farmer – though I could not see a plow or how different the ground might have been after row upon row had been completed. The farmer was taking advantage of every bit of daylight available. Perhaps if there was enough moonlight he would continue working after supper, unless he had already had his?…
