# 14 Appraisal (250 word fiction haibun with beginning renga)
that autumnal beach
of his life so dark the clouds
could he have found light
what secrets did he take with
him into the depths of crazed death
did he make bonfire
for Samhain eve to act as
a guide for his loves
I didn’t have to worry about getting candy for Halloween. The community celebrated by having a festival at the firehouse. All were welcome. There were games like ping pong and bobbing for apples. Local businesses had tables set up with candy for anyone under ten. The area behind the station was set up as a scare-station where volunteers pretended to be ghosts from the fields that would rattle chains or pretend to say ‘Ouch’ when fake zombie limbs fell off. I’d been to a few of them when I was a child visiting my Uncle. I could do without that type of socialization. Most folks thought I was nuts enough to buy what they had thought was a haunted farm homestead.
I was going to deal with my own ‘ghosts’. The three scarecrows that the Farmer’s wife seems to have made to resemble her family. My found mutt, Dawg lead me to her crafting space in the barn. They were in my basement now. Halloween was just a good as anytime to explore what might be hiding in the pockets of the clothing or even within the stuffing. I made sure my generator was working and that Dawg was content. I wore plastic gloves just in case … ©JP/dh
