What an amazing juxtaposition of images. We don’t always get enough of these ‘leap’ links but here we have a wartime censor (which war, there are so many now) who may or may not be overzealous with ‘blacking’ out letters to home.
Thankfully with the modern wars we seem to want to continue, some soldiers can use Skype or FaceTime etc… to “live-speak” to their loved ones.
I think the great clue here is ‘silverfish’:

So this may have to do with WWII (a continuation of WWI, and all subsequent wars are really a continuation) where paper was the main medium of communication to and from soldiers.
The silverfish creatures are continuing the work of the censors, just as censorship continues to this day, not only about WWII, but everything that touches us in our lives.
This haiku is a great example of how the new genre, out of the Basho hokku etc…, has evolved, and can capture nature in all its intermingling aspects.
warm regards,
Alan
