Ascension

 

haibun

 

A flash of red.

A cardinal perches high on a prematurely blossoming maple. He marks his territory, repeatedly singing the same crescendo. Moments later, he’s gone.

No bird takes his place.

Ides of March
pine needles fluttering
in the wind
