#WaybackWednesday 11/22/2017 … on restless reflections #haibun #haiku #poetry

Author’s Note: my cousin dies in a motorcycle accident some years ago. This haibun reflects the events of the day after his funeral.

Restless Day After

A Nickelodeon version of Cinderella plays in the family room. Bella, our neighbor’s golden retriever, barks at a passing dog and walker. The pine-scented aroma from our freshly mopped tile floor reaches the living room. Mira rests on our fading cream love seat. I watch her miss filly T-shirt rise and fall with each breath.

Just yesterday I laid a rose on the stainless steel casket holding my 27-year-old cousin.

Just yesterday.

Oh Frank, 27 years old. How sad. A beautiful poem, an especially wonderful haiku.

That is so sad, leaving that rose is always so hard for me to do…wishing your family peace.

Somehow those last roses comfort me. In your poem, the juxtaposition of death and breath–of the great unknown and intimate detail–is spellbinding.

Both descriptive and narrative parts blend beautifully. And not all roses delight but they definitely speak of love. 27 years tug at the heartstrings.

A beautiful haibun Frank, the prose and haiku complement each other in a very poignant way. It is so sad and always harder for those left behind when a young life ends this unexpectedly. May your cousin have an amazing time on the other side of the rainbow, I hope new adventures await him there 🌈

A fitting haibun, sad but daringly a measure of strength on those still living and striving to carry on! Wonderful write Frank!
