A Visit to the Owl

What must have gone through poor Mrs. Brisbee’s mind? A mouse, venturing into the lair of an owl so close to dark. Nothing short of a desperate mother’s love for her sick son could so drive her to face such horror alone.

And what did she gain? A riddle. Seek out the rats of the rose bush. Ask them to accomplish the Sisyphean task of moving her home to “the lee of the stone.”

But she survives her encounter with certain death. The Owl takes flight. And she has her answer.

I marveled at this animated classic as a child. The fierce, matter-of-fact presence of the night raptor, the timid-yet-earnest demeanor of the mother-mouse. Years later, Mrs. Brisbee’s encounter with the Owl still elicits a shudder. And a smile.

Victoria hosts at dVerse Poets Pub tonight. She asks for a haibun on the subject of owls. I couldn’t resist this foray into nostalgia!

Enjoyed the story and where you took the memory. I want to learn more about the American Haijin. Nice effect, not unlike the American Sentence using the syllable count for the Haiku.

Dang. I love that movie too. Maybe because i am a timothy.
And the encounter with that owl def made a lasting impression as a kid. The tinkling of the bones. The deep voice.

An owl could probably teach my cats a few things.

I have never seen this film and I am curious now – I love how you link your childhood memories to the present in your final lines ☺

Fun memory. Our “haiku” endings were similar. Ah yes the sacrifices of love.

I don’t know the movie but there are many tales of the victim seeking help from the predator – and gets away with it. The haiku was a reality-shock.

Thanks, Petru! The haiku counterpoints the prose with the reality of a owl and a mouse.

Oh my….must tell you….when I read that one sentence haiku at the end, I absolutely issued an audible and visceral shiver. Wow! This cuts right to it.

I liked the story about Mrs Brisbee and then coupling that with the more realistic haiku.

I have not seen the movie, but in your words the story tastes like an Aesop fable, which I think it should with the theme of seeking out the predator.

It’s funny how some things we see as a child have such a lasting impression. I haven’t seen this movie though.
    Your one-sentence haiku is wonderful.
