Thanksgiving Weekend 2012

Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd

Another wave of sickness strikes. Iโ€™m on my knees over the master bath toilet. Orange-and-brown bile fills water and stains the porcelain rim, along with the painted walls and freshly-washed tile.

Blackness. A slow awakening, questions. How did I get here? Why did I wake up in Dadโ€™s bed?

All I know for sure is the sickness. And the company Iโ€™ve abandoned.

November 23rd

Grass has grown full and green over Dadโ€™s grave. The monument looks as new as the first day I saw it last summer.

Mom, Rob and I stare in silence. Itโ€™s her anniversary โ€” the first without him. She hasnโ€™t shed a tear today โ€”yet.

Oh gosh this is so heart-wrenching ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I like how you depict the feeling of sadness and pain in the second one.. sigh..

Your second haibun is so moving – the contrast with the enormity of the first anniversary without him and the traffic droning on is especially poignant

This is great Frank. The two haibun joined together. Especially poignant is the second. This will be my first TG without my mother.the image of your mother is heartbreaking. The headstone standing in for the father in this family scene.

Thanks, Toni! 2012 was the first TG without Dad. We lost Mom in May of 2016, but thatโ€™s another haibun…

I am so sorry. As of June both my parents were dead. It is off to think of being an orphan.

These holidays are moments to remember and reflect… a burden that can be shared (and has to be so)

The eeriness of the grave-site is reduced somewhat by the traffic flow. Well captured Frank!

November seems to dance with death and loss, and for you it seems this is a literal thing all around… *hugs*
