Coyote monologues Narcissus: a #TankaProse

Coyote

Don’t look at me like that!

Geesh! The first time you tear your eyes away from that pond in forever, and it’s to give me an attitude?

Look, I’m a culture hero. I pulled a Prometheus, and stole fire from the sun for humanity. I practically raised the Crow myself, and I even tried my hand at a creation or two.

Ok, so I laughed those new creations into obscurity. And perhaps I’ve made a wager or two that I’ve come to regret. Yes, I’ve sometimes out-clevered myself by half.

But I’ve also out-thought the predators of my people. Ask that white trader standing in his skin in the trading post. And when I go all in for my own, I mean I go all in. Christopher Moore can tell you.

What have you done?

Worshipped your own reflection, until you withered and died. Your own mother had to turn you into a flower just to hold on to something of you. Look how you treated poor echo! And if you hadn’t doneย Ameinias so dirty, Nemesis wouldn’t have smackdown divined you into your obsession with yourself in the first place.

And what have you done since then?

Spread your peculiar self-worship to entire cultures. Reality TV. The Kardashians. Hell, your name is in the DSM-V as a psychiatric condition!

Yeah, Reynard the fox gets all the glory for trickery among the European descended. People lose their minds when they see me tossing their garbage or strolling through central park. Hey, if they didn’t want me there, why did they build an aquaduct all the way to my backyard?

But I’m still moving, I’m still growing, I’m still growing strong.

And you? You are the origin of a condition, my friend! And your flower doesn’t even smell good! So do us both a favor–check your attitude.

And put your eyes back on your own reflection!

Coyote monologue — perfect! Plus he’s a badass compared to the sissy Narcissus venerated by our culture. What’s the point of going daffy about daffodils? Well done, Frank.

Ha.. yes a coyote should have exactly this voice… it’s said that Coyote and Loki of the Nordic Mythology has something in common… but Narcissus is the worst of examples, and he seems to rule the word by now
