A Melodious Love Affair
I fell in love with “My Favorite Things” for the first time at the Excaliber Hotel in Las Vegas during August of 1990. Accompanying my family on our last vacation before my sophmore year in college, I walked through a spacious hall designed to resemble a medieval market. Somewhere in that “market”, a singer performed the “Sound of Music” single.
Her enrapturing melody ensnared me. The timbre of her voice, as she crooned the descending e-minor bridge, swooned me. I felt as hooked as I’ve ever felt by any performance of that song.
Until I heard John Coltrane’s live version!
Jazz crescendos
the music of my heart
in every note
still shuddering at the bridge
after all these years
