Eleventh Day, Eleventh Month, Twenty-twenty-three

Today, 2023.

The Cherry tree outside our sun room has golden leaves, at last. Fitting for it’s position, basking in the morning sun. Across the street, a well-manicured young elm trembles in a passing breeze. Scattered leaves flutter to the sidewalk.

Saint Martin of Tours day, 2023.

The Roman Patrician, a calvary officer that chose the path of peace, is a patron saint of soldiers. How fitting that his feast day falls on the former Armistice Day: Veterans Day.

Veterans Day, 2023.

A facebook announcement from my former, neighboring village. The annual Veterans Day Parade and Ceremony kicks off at 11`AM. My son’s Boy Scout Troop, with whom I still volunteer, will be there, as they are every year. I sigh, knowing that this year, I won’t.

My birthday, 2023.

The Facebook notifications fill. The texts come in. Of course, the Bride led all well-wishers before I picked up the phone. Now, she meets with her co-supervision group online. I contemplate a walk to Starbucks for my annual gratis beverage, or to B&A for a haircut. A bread, proscuitto and cheese lunch—with a Chilean merlot—awaits.

As does the Lakecia Benjamin Quartet at Birdland tonight!

Indeed, it is! I am a Veterans Day baby. Guess my parents really enjoyed Valentines Day, 1970! 🤣

People sometimes forget that every day life goes on within the sweeping tides of history. Happy Birthday again, Frank! It sounds like you’re having a lovely day.
