The First Summer Heatwave

The sun blazed across a sky with few clouds. Searing heat cooked me to a toasty medium well just on my walk from the front door to the car. Heat shimmers rose from the asphalt.

But inside the Columbus Educational campus, many valiant air conditioners drone on in their noble struggle to maintain a comfortable chill.

One has done such an effective job that I put on my green Levi hoodie.

I love the haiku… the songbirds are ceasing to sing… something really change after solstice.

Thanks, Bjorn. Looks like some of them recovered their voices this afternoon! 🤣

I love summer heat and hate air-conditioning. Sweater off, sweater on, and so forth.

I posted the wrong poem on the 21, so I apologize. I thought it was today’s.

    I did not post today.

I hope to submit it for the anthology. It will.be #2 if I did the first one correctly they should have it. Going to attempt another.

I enjoyed this glimpse of your first summer heatwave, Frank, but I don’t think I could cope with that kind of heat, or with air conditioning. I love the image of the ‘songbirds hiding in the canopy’!

Thanks, Kim! I’m not fond of this heat myself, but I’m sure grateful for AC!

I see with this heat dome NYC is as hot as Charlotte! Your haibun tells the story very well!

My kids unplugged one of our air conditioners today to plug in a video game system instead. That was short lived.

Now that is the summer I know and dread when too scared to go outside and the birds fall silent. The air conditioner is a lifesaver.

I was in Virginia last week, and the combination of heat and humidity was like trawling through oatmeal. I don’t know how people can cope with that kind of heat. Glad you have AC to help until autumn arrives.

Weird, having to dress up indoors after the heat you described. Glad to hear the songbirds perked up somewhat.

I enjoyed reading of summer heat as I shiver in the southern winter down here on the edge of Australia.

I have to swear sweaters and sweatshirts whenever we run the air conditioner. Otherwise, I’m chilled to the bone!

it was a shimmer for sure. Last week it hit Colorado and then rained so I hope that pushes East to cool you down. We are hot today, but then it cools down to a hot can handle here. I hope that this is it on the dome.
