Transforming Encounters: a #haibun through other eyes #haiku #poetry

A roar. My rear legs step back. But I’m half out of the brush. Curious.

What approaches?

A man. Seated on what makes the thunder. An “ATV,” I’ve heard humans say.

Our eyes meet.

I half-step back.

He stares, but he comes no closer.

I almost smile. Can he possibly know how this encounter changes his life?

More thunder. More men come. I back into the bush.

Leaving him to wonder at the sight of me.

Colorado sky

that glimpse of coyote

still remains

coyote-looking

Kim hosts dVerse tonight. We are to write a poem about an animal in a human way. I write about an actual encounter I had with a coyote while riding ATVs in the Colorado Rockies. This time, I explore the encounter through that coyote’s eyes.

The ominous encounter that changes one’s life without one knowing it. Nice approach to the coyote.

Love coyotes and their stealthy presence even in the city. And yes, an encounter does change the humans they meet. Great write!

Coyotes have been wonderful yet distant hiking companions beneath the Colorado sky, despite their trickster role in folklore. I’ve actually found our encounters to be rather straightforward.

Coyote–the trickster–roams my turf and now and again wanders into our neighborhoods. I like hearing them at night. Makes me feel as though I am in the wild.

I love this, and was just going to comment on their trickster part, and maybe it will changed the men, but I think the encounter changes the coyote too.

I love your take on the prompt, Frank, and am glad you wrote about a coyote – don’t see or even hear about them over here.
