The sun slips beneath the Ramapo Mountains. The long red of a sailor’s delight sky spreads out like opening hands. A long spring day lingers on into a delightful twilight. This is when the neigborhood kids begin their game of manhunt.
Frankie joins Zach, Alli and James on Alli’s driveway. Ben, Joshua and Alli’s older sister Becca–the big kids–gather, too. The hiding team races to find their hiding spots, and every yard of every house on the block is fair game. Then the hunting team sets off in pursuit.
Shouts of discovery, thumping of sneakers running across cut grass and asphalt, and the delight of them all as the red sky darkens to a velvety purple. Soon dusk will arrive, and then night will fall.
The kids will play by flashlight until we gather them back home.
A Chijitsu manhunt eventually ends. But there’s always tomorrow.
