A Chijitsu Manhunt

The sun slips beneath the Ramapo Mountains. The long red of a sailor’s delight sky spreads out like opening hands. A long spring day lingers on into a delightful twilight. This is when the neigborhood kids begin their game of manhunt.

Frankie joins Zach, Alli and James on Alli’s driveway. Ben, Joshua and Alli’s older sister Becca–the big kids–gather, too. The hiding team races to find their hiding spots, and every yard of every house on the block is fair game. Then the hunting team sets off in pursuit.

Shouts of discovery, thumping of sneakers running across cut grass and asphalt, and the delight of them all as the red sky darkens to a velvety purple. Soon dusk will arrive, and then night will fall.

The kids will play by flashlight until we gather them back home.

A Chijitsu manhunt eventually ends. But there’s always tomorrow.

You bring back such good memories of childhood, hide-and-seek into the late evening…back when it seemed safe. the image of the haiku works so well. Thanks for joining.

Oh, I remember playing till dark settled. Is that a form of hide and seek?

Itโ€™s a team version of hide-and-seek and tag. Thereโ€™s even a base that the hiding team can reach to evade capture by the seeking team! ๐Ÿ˜€

I didn’t think kids still played outside. You don’t see it anymore. They were such great times.

Loved playing outdoor flashlight games. Sardines and Flashlight tag being my favorites. I love this scene you so wonderfully painted with your words. Almost sends me back in time…

I loved your story, Frank. It took me right back to nights of Red Light Stop, and Kick the Can. The doe and fawn is a nice touch.

One of the things I love about our international poetry communities is learning new forms of old sayings and finding out about the different landscapes we see when we look out of our windows. ‘The sun slips beneath the Ramapo Mountains’ evokes such amazing pictures for me as I live in a flat landscape. In England, the saying is ‘red sky at night, shepherd’s delight’ while you say ‘sailor’s’ delight’ and your game is called ‘manhunt’. I love the personification in ‘T’he long red of a sailorโ€™s delight sky spreads out like opening hands’ and the sounds in ‘Shouts of discovery’ and ‘thumping of sneakers’.

I like how this gives a vignette of enjoying the end of the day actively outdoors until you can no more because of the dark (or the mosquitos). The haiku fits perfectly.

Like Kim I love how you set the scene with the mountains in the beginning… just the name of the mountains means poetry… and that wonderful memory of being a kid playing until it’s really dark.
