Awaiting the Doctor: An .@ImageCurve #haibun

Conversations carry on outside the grain-laminate door. Papers rustle. A phone rings with a staccato four-beat tone in the key of “E”. Lights hum.

I sit in the last examination room on the left.

A middle-aged Filipina in sky-blue scrubs measures my blood pressure. Her eyes widen. “Let me take it on your other arm,” she says. She straps the band. Pumps. Watches the mercury rise. Listens to my pulse.

Still high.

“The Doctor will be in soon,” she says, before leaving. I finish the 15-page introduction to The Essential Basho. More time passes.

The exam room door remains closed.

I am often inspired by the lives of my patients and enjoy their thoughts about their wait at the hospital, frustrating emotions become more light hearted as a coffee is shared or story told. Reading makes the waiting less painful I hope.

Indeed, it does! Especially when the read is Basho’s Narrow Road to the Interior! 🙂 Thanks! 🙂

Yes I so agree with that. Basho is amazing

Did Basho bring the blood pressure down? Funny how they can leave you so long in the examination room even after enduring the waiting room.

Afraid not. Yeah, that’s been the routine of doctors in the New York Metropolitan area for several years now.

A friend was almost locked in as they started leaving and locking up for the night.

That kind of waiting can be long. Good for you to bring a book and let time pass productively.

Oh boy – this is not comfortable waiting.

I can identify with this one. Seems they inadvertently use waiting as a means of raising anxiety. I spent my morning waiting three hours at the car dealership only to be told my problem was not covered by warranty! Hope your result was better!

Very descriptive. I can feel my own blood pressure rising.

This reminds me of my most recent hospital appointment, Frank – you have my sympathy! I like the way details are amplified, such as the phone ringing ‘with a staccato four-beat tone in the key of “E”’ and the wrinkled poster!

I fully relate to this heightened awareness of sounds, sights and interactions in a medical waiting room. A true slice of life.

That’s the worst kind of wait, to be sure.

I love how you handled that… clearly many would be nervous after taking the pressure with a reaction like that… keeping Basho handy must be a wise choice.

Oh boy! This wait time is too long and not right. I once had a doctor who took her time to see me (maybe, even the other patients, too) because she entertained too many med reps during her clinic hours. Years later, we saw in a publication that she was one of the top recipients of med reps bounty.

Good thing you had a book to read, though, to keep you company.
