Spring Emergent?

Photo by Valeria Boltneva on Pexels.com

Who can believe it? The third day in February, and I wear a spring jacket to work over a hoodie. And on the way home, I leave the jacket in the trunk .

A dusting of snow fell yesterday morning. It was gone before noon. I heard a bird sing for the first time since summer–or at least the last thaw!

But the Maple trees won’t be so easily fooled. Buds remain sealed. No sign of growth emerges from the ground, either.

How long this interlude lasts is any meteorologist’s guess. But if this is the foretaste of spring, I’ll take it–mild winter or no.

such a dainty build up of growth … then burst into laughter about the weather man! They only guess, never get it right here ๐Ÿ™‚

Very good Frank. The long days remind us that they know when spring will arrive!

I’d like to disagree with you, but I’m enjoying the lull in winter’s harshness also.

Trust the maples, Frank! I agree about โ€˜how quickly night still comes / after twilightโ€™, but itโ€™s staying lighter longer.

Wherever we live on Earth it is never quite right is it? The trouble is we have a unreasonable attitude and consideer we should be in control of everything but are clearly we are not. I am sure the maples will wake up when they feel the urge!

it is good to read and know about the plants that will not be fooled and follow their internal calendar. your haibun shows the many faces of an approaching spring, such a joy to read

Excellent haibun, Frank! I’m keeping my thoughts quiet regarding an early spring. Then I won’t be disappointed if and when winter sneaks back in.

I love this. I note, too, how quickly night still comes, but love each extra added minute of light at the end of day.

Maybe the maple tree reacts to daylight more than temperature… I think many trees need light first to wake up. Nights are still long…

I’ve heard that the flow of water up into the tree spurs the budding process. I imagine water flow depends on light–and temperature.

      Thanks, Bjorn! ๐Ÿ™‚

This has been a strange winter. Some of the spring bulbs are emerging, but I know it could still get cold.

Indeed, it has! It almost makes Spring seem anticlimatic. Thanks, Merril! ๐Ÿ™‚

Beautifully written Frank. The mild weather is fine but I miss that snowed in feeling. I might have to wait until next year.

Maybe not, Pat. While it looks like an early spring, there’s still the rest of February and Mad March! Anything is possible!

      Thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚
