Curious Communion: a #haibun

When is the virtual more vital than the real?

When social distancing is the order of the day. When the well-meant gathering makes us accessories after the fact to infecting others. When we need to isolate in the real to deprive Corona its breeding ground.

NYC schools begin remote learning this Monday. 1.1 million school children will learn virtually. Our own school has a departmental schedule to follow, consisting of outreach, preparation, and monitoring of student work completed using google classroom. We plan our activities this week for the roll-out.

Yes, for some, the lure of the real proves too inticing. Full beaches and bars (when they were open) attest to that. But however unreal, the virtual offers us community in a time of solitude.

We are only as alone as we want to be.

Indeed, we are blessed (after all) to live in the age of social media, so need not experience true isolation. I like the way you’ve written this.

Interestingly, the Australian Government is encouraging schools to stay open (though banning many other gatherings) on the grounds that some parents might be health workers who would then have to stay home to mind their kids instead of working to help the community. (Some schools here are closing anyway.)

Absolutely! In fact, I don’t know what we would we do if it weren’t for social media. Can’t imagine what it would be like to become completely isolated. With corona making its rounds .. it’s important to take a few precautionary measures. Thank you so much for writing to the prompt ๐Ÿ™‚

Well we could be looking for the boxes of jigsaws! Sadly the further we advance as human beings the more reliance is placed on human interaction (now a No, No!)

Yes, “community in the time of solitude.” I think one benefit is we are reaching out to those virtually we apparently didn’t have time for when the world was able to go outside.
