A fruit basket, delivered to a hotel room–covered in lighter fluid. A patronizing condescension during a class introduction: “one of our special people.” The abject fear with which the six-foot-something boy in a man’s body commanded.

If only he had understood the old Portugese saying:

“Beware the dog that doesn’t bark”

a routine stop

an identity confirmed

by his victim

how many tickets, officer,

can you give your old bully?

    The entire poem is powerful…..but these words to me are the most powerful and thought provoking and I wonder, how often this is true for a young man in his growth spurt, still a boy but in a man’s body.
