It’s the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We in the United States celebrate it as a Federal Holiday. This year, his life–and his message–resonate deeply. The year 2020 saw a resurgence of civil rights protest, ignited by the killing of George Floyd. Twelve days ago, the world witnessed a mob of nearly all-white insurrectionists, incited by outgoing president Donald Trump, storm the US Capital to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election. The original sin of the USA has never been more evident.
Dr. King devoted his life to combatting white supremacy through his championing of Civil Rights. While American society made progess, it is evident to all clear-seeing, and clear-thinking, people just how much further we, the people, have to go.
Our pledge of allegiance ends with the phrase “… and justice for all.” Until we live this in fact, we carry the debt that Dr. King spoke of in his “I have a dream” speech. Justice matters. When any of us are denied it, no one has it.
Therefore, our kigo this week is “justice.”
Write the haikai poem of your choice (haiku, senryu, haibun, tanka, haiga, renga, etc.) that alludes to justice.
