Dead Reckoning

Her hands, covered in dirt. Trembling. Hot streams of tears slide off her checks and onto the broken ground. Her chest heaves and heaves, but her sobs remain silent.

A crow caws, takes flight from the topmost leafless branch of the dead Pinon. One glance over her shoulder. A gaunt, pale face bearing reddened, resigned eyes, still smoldering with the last embers of anger.

The crow circles once. It’s body eclipses the sun for just a moment.

& just like that, she’s gone.

only distant leaves

Frank the way you have presented the image of the dead tree makes it look like a looming monster ready to attack. I’m not sure if “she” is a person or a ghost he is looking at, but you pulled me into the atmosphere. The look of her face and then poof she is gone brings me a feeling of deep sadness for whomever she is or was and for what he is experiencing.

The ‘she’ – O’Keefe herself? Her work eclipsing the sun for a moment in time – the first (recognised) modern artist. Did you know one of her sisters were a painter too but never achieved the recognition she did.

An ambiguous haunting response, Frank, that raises questions.

This is incredibly dark and enticing, Frank! I love how the poem gives the reader several interpretations to choose from 😀

“Her” immediately took on O’Keefe for me, which really melds her with her artwork, the landscape, everything. It captures the essence of emotional upheaval and madness.

    What an end.👏🏻

I agree, with others the protagonist sounds a lot like Georgia, and maybe how much she became that dead tree herself.

We chose the same imagery Frank. Admiring the “her” of the artist in this landscape. What struck me the most is the impending death. Love the ending.

Very haunting. I think it captures the inner turmoil of someone wanting freedom using symbolism, but teh again, its open to many different interpretations.

So many ways to interpret this–dead reckoning– but haunting and perfect for October.
