Just an Ordinary Walk

Mira’s legacy is ready. Jack’s Auto is only a 15 minute walk up Palmer Avenue. It’s cold, but not freezing. I put on my black suade, new wool hat, and gloves.

Step after step up the sidewalk, the cold finding gaps through which to seep. Thic h Nhat Hanh’s “The Miracle of Mindfulness” plays through my air pods. The rush of speeding cars along the busy road sounds over the audio book. I return to my breath, as the Vietnamese zen master discusses breathing and mindfulness.

I experienced immediate, penetrating awareness of environs in which I walked before. Back then, I never had a term for the phenomena.

Unlike today.

I am reading a book on meditation and I haven’t gotten that far except one of the first steps is to focus on the breath (of course) but to repeat two soothing (my own interpretation) words. It works!

Thanks, Gillena. Yours, too! I tried to comment on yours, but Blogger wouldn’t let me log in using Chrome—even though I’m logged into Blogger and using Chrome with my Google account already logged in! 🤣

        I can’t get into Blogger. I couldn’t comment on Gillena’s haibun. ☹️

Sounds like a multisensory high. Reminds me of that old song, “take to the sky on a natural high.”

What an energizing yet calming experience, the “immediate, penetrating awareness” — Neatly crafted haibun, Frank.

Nicely done, Frank. I like the way you describe the ‘cold finding gaps through which to seep’ to convey the cold, and the use of sound to set the scene.

I have never really managed this, but so great to be able to use such tools to get some space in a busy environment.

Such a contrast between the speeding cars and the mindfulness mentor throught the earbuds. It is amazing to be able to choose where we place our gaze.

It’s amazing what we experience when we take the time to breathe and take it all in. Nicely done, Frank and thanks for hosting!

Wonderful. From the beginning, the details take the reader on the walk….except I didn’t have the skill to divide those sounds the way you could. It must take a lot of focus and practice!
