Metamorphic Exemplars

The last full week in August. The swan song of summer vacation.

A flock of Canadian Geese in V-formation flew southeast late last week. & while a return of summer heat sizzles the Westchester County communities along the Long Island Sound, oak and maple leaves began falling.

That’s why there’s a poignancy in seeing the Brandywine Valley’s Longwood Gardens. Vibrant hues from a kaleidescope of flowers cascade across our eyes. the beauty of Italian fountains entrances us. The tranquil shade of forested paths relieve us of the sunlit meadow we had just walked beside.

But the marvel of the garden is its “Water ballet” show, as Mira dubs it. We watch in awe as the fountains of the Fountain gardens twist and arc their spouts in time to the orchestral accompanyment playing. An immense swelling of combined streams forms a water-cloud almost alive with motion. Four songs later, the fountains resume their staid, ordinary functions, as though nothing happened.

If there’s a metaphor for this Summer gradually transforming to Autumn this week, I can’t think of a better one than that.

I so regret not being able to visit Longwood Gardens when I was in the area. There was a torrential downpour. This is just lovely, Frank..

Those dancing fountains are amazing to watch. I was in Vegas and watched the dancing waters of the Bellagio. I have never been to Longwood Gardens. I may have to look into visiting there. Enjoyed your haibun.

      Thanks, Truedessa.

I’ve seen the Bellagio show. The Longwood Gardens fountains put it to shame!

Thank you for the guided tour of Longwood Gardens and the accompanying photos, Frank. The change of colour and falling leaves seems to happen earlier in your part of the world, while we have to wait until the end of September, beginning of October. I’d love to see the water ballet show. Your haiku encapsulates autumn.

      Thanks, Kim.

The truth is that leaf is the only one that fell so far. In my corner of NY, the peak foliage is around the 2nd week in October.
