You pursued me day and night. With every closing footstep of yours, I fled.
Deeper and deeper through encroaching oaks and along leg-breaking switchbacks I ran. Your hunter’s steps carried on. The scent of your dank sweat and avaricious torments me. But no matter what lead I gain, you always close in.
Now, the barking of hounds assails me. Were you not enough? Or have rivals joined your chase?
I feel a shudder. Not long now—soon, even my enormous wind will fail. & so soon, it does, as your arrow finds its mark. A piercing pain, an ever-brief agony, as I collapse. Another white stag, taken.
But before I fade to black, what is it I experience? An offered prayer? Cold steel to my chest? an indigo ink applied around my piercings?
Oh, Hunter, what does this mean?
You drew stars around my scars
Bjorn hosts Prosery, over at dVerse, where we write 144 word flash-fiction using a chosen lyric of poetry. This time, we write to Taylor Swift’s line, “You drew stars around my scars,” from “Cardigan” off of her Folklore album.
