A Cataract Surgery Experience

The words I could read without needing glasses. The words on a screen I suddenly couldn’t. The word “cataract” said aloud by a new ophthalmologist.

The legion of eyedrops in preparation. The anesthesia flowing through an I.V. The swallowing darkness and euphoria.

The voice saying, “Look at the light.” The glowing, blue triangles in a swirling dark, surrounded by white light. The slow awakening to the day.

The sharp clarity of details at a distance, noticed for the first time in years.

Your haibun resonates with me, Frank, although I have had a few problems since and still have to wear varifocals as I have axial myopia and macular degeneration. I’m so pleased your cataract treatment was successful, and I love the haiku.

It is amazing what they can do. Very nicely done. It is all over in a half hour.
