Looking ahead:
It’s the first full weekend in December. A winter storm has already dropped a foot of snow in parts of upstate New York. Our area saw at least 6 inches. More snow is in the forecast, too.
The traditional calendar has it right, calling this time of year winter (in the Northern Hemisphere, of course.) It’s cold. And the December full moon arrives on the twelfth.
The Cold Moon:
During this month the winter cold fastens its grip, and nights are at their longest and darkest. It is also sometimes called the Moon before Yule.
The term Long Nightโs Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun.
This week, write the haikai poem of your choice (haiku, senryu, haibun, tanka, haiga, renga, etc.) that alludes to this month’s full moon, the Cold Moon
