A Duel of Fates

The waves bore witness. The storm clouds arriving at sunset showed unusual interest. The shadow of a departing titan passed on indifferently.

What did these samarai say to each other on that beach? Did they share commiserations of the karma that brought them there? Shed a tear of remorse for the necessary death sure to come? Or were they all about the business.

Masters that they were, surely a handful of heartbeats is all it would last. One katana slicing apart an opponent who commited only one mistake. One falls, one walks away.

With only a storm-swept sky and a sunset-reflecting sea to remember.

although

this is my end

grieve not

you will join me

soon enough

Afterword, for one is necessary when the realization of blood spilled on the sand becomes flushed with the incoming tide.

Are we who we say we are? Or do the facts of our words and actions speak for us despite our own testimony?

One still remains fallen, one still walks away.

even as

our sins cry out

we protest

but what we have done

we have done

A powerful double haibun, Frank. No, we cannot separate evil men from what they have done.

Evocative, and may I also say, profound. I especially love this:

Afterword, for one is necessary when the realization of blood spilled on the sand becomes flushed with the incoming tide.

I read this yesterday and wanted to let it sink in. What an awesome metaphor with the two samurai. I get the sense of the battle always raging between unseen forces, good and evil.

“Afterword, for one is necessary when the realization of blood spilled on the sand becomes flushed with the incoming tide.” Especially mesmerizing.

Frank, I find this to be such a profound commentary on the senselessness of violence and war. It’s framed at the micro/individual level but fits at the macro/collective level, too. As individuals, as a society, “Are we who we say we are? Or do the facts of our words and actions speak for us despite our own testimony?”

This is dark in a way that dark needs to be spoken about. (Hope that makes sense.) Your haibun is very, very powerful.

Are who we say we are? We all have a mask or two, with a dash of denial I’m sure. This raises so many metaphysical and existential questions. You will join me soon enough carries for me the thought that we all live we all die, but we all conduct ourselves according to our cose – and our mistakes. Wonderful stuff Frank.
